A solid propellant is heated through its external surface and a hot spot appears. Fast decomposition occurs in the hot spot, inducing shock wave propagation in the solid reactant. Deflagration starts from the hot spot surface and grows. The deflagration front becomes unstable with characteristic cellular patterns.
